Artist Statement

My process involves scavenging for images to appropriate in my collages or “de-collages.” I think of this as cultural cannibalism or cultural recycling. In an image-based society, one that generates thousands of frames per second, the only sensible thing to do is to start to destroy them. My method is similar to that of street artists and propagandists who use wheat paste to quickly post temporary flyers; sometimes resulting in layers of images posted in public spaces. I use the paste to layer newspaper after newspaper to make a tablet which is then lit on fire. REACH (Realizing Ethnic Awareness and Cultural Heritage) Across Dayton celebrates the synergies between Dayton’s ethnic and cultural communities. This annual collaboration with Sinclair Community College and EboNia Gallery includes exhibitions, a community art project and a studies conference.
