Getting It On the Wall: Installing Artwork

Tools needed:
Artwork ready to be installed
Conventional Picture Hooks (found at hardware or art supply stores) 20, 30 or 50 lb. hooks
Hammer
Tape measure
Level

Instructions

  1. Place the artwork against the wall in the general area where you think it should go. Use a tape measure to keep a consistent amount of space between the pieces.
  2. Decide what your eye level or vertical level will be, somewhere between 57.5-62 in. is the vertical center for artwork in most galleries and museums and it does vary from place to place depending on the cliental. Our gallery usually installs artwork at 60 in. on the vertical center, unless we have a specific instruction from the artist or owner of the artwork.
  3. Measure the height of your frame (A) and divide the result in half. See image below.
  4. Measure the distance between the wire at full tension (B) and the top of the frame (C).
  5. Subtract the answer from number 4 from number 3.
  6. Add your answer from number 5 to your vertical center that you have predetermined (e.g. 60 in.).
  7. Place nail and hanger here. Make sure that the bottom of your hanger is resting on the line when you hammer your nail in, rather than the nail point. This is where your wire will rest (on the crook of the hanger).
  8. If the piece is large or heavy, it is recommended to use 2 picture hangers that are between 3 and 10 inches apart, depending on the size of the artwork. This provides two points of contact that distribute the weight evenly, securing it to the wall.
  9. Make sure your piece is level after putting it up on the wall.

Tip: While it is recommended to use two picture hook hangers (that will provide two points of contact) for larger or heavier pieces, if you use two hangers on smaller pieces they will stay level longer.
