The Cline Show

History

This program was established by the Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) in memory of Barbara C. Cline. While serving as DVAC’s office manager for 10 years, Barb affected the lives of hundreds of student interns and emerging artists. After her sudden passing in March 2006, DVAC members and staff wished to honor her work in teaching area artists about the artist-gallery relationship.

Programmatic goals include mounting a juried, all-area college exhibition as the culmination of a three-month teaching process, covering how to plan, mount and publicize a successful exhibition and how to make the artist-gallery relationship successful. Three participants will have paid posts: curator/juror, registrar/coordinator and preparator/installer.

The program meshes with DVAC’s student membership program, by which students in their last two years of post-secondary education are offered one year of free membership in return for 15 hours of volunteer time.

The program has been funded through contributions to the Barbara C. Cline Memorial Fund, as well as a sponsorship from the University of Dayton in 2009-10. Invited academic institutions have been: Central State University, Miami University, Sinclair Community College, University of Dayton, Wittenberg University and Wright State University. Any faculty member who is a member of DVAC may nominate one student to be a part of the program.

The next Cline Show will be March 2-24, 2012.
